Castlewellan Show is held within the beautiful grounds of Castlewellan Forest Park. The land leased from the Annesley family in 1967 became a forest park in 1969. When here visit the Annesley Gardens and National Arboretum with its magnificent collection of trees and shrubs, and the Peace Maze, the largest and longest permanent hedge maze in the world.
Castlewellan and District Agricultural Show 2008
A showery start failed to dampen spirits at this year's Castlewellan Show where the 12,000 visitors were treated to the best of Northern Ireland's agricultural world and a well deserved afternoon in the sunshine.
Sheep were once again out in force at the show with Norman Robinson taking the Northern Bank Interbreed Championship and qualifying for the NSA/Northern Bank Championship along with R & J Graham and Victor Chestnut
The highlight of the Cattle section was the National Hereford Finals which attracted a large number of entries while the Future Systems Supreme Dairy Champion was won by I & L Robinson. P. Murphy won the United Feeds Interbreed Pedigree Young Bull Championships and the Ulster Bank Interbreed Pedigree Young Heifer Championship was won by W. J. Irvine.
The total number of entries in the livestock competitions, including rabbits and goats numbered around 4,800 but there was much more for visitors to enjoy.
Home industries displayed tray bakes, bread, floral displays, paintings, photographs, and numerous school entries were on show. Closkelt W.I. won the Mad Hatter's Tea Party display and Alexandra Woods took the Moorcroft Salver for the highest number of points in the home industries section
Castlewellan Show, regarded as one of the premier shows in Northern Ireland, meant even Radio Ulster was in attendance with John Toal broadcasting for two hours in the morning.
Stalls selling everything from 100mm wrenches to welly boots, food vendors offering the best of local produce and an impressive showing from the area's machinery dealers mean't that Castlewellan Show provided something for everyone, and remains one of the highlights in the agricultural calendar of Northern Ireland.
